I've recently had to clean up my hard drive and all the other shit that has accumulated over the last 2 years on my computer. I found a great program that cleans all kinds of stuff including your registry. It has made a huge difference in my computer's performance. If you don't have this program, I recommend getting it. It's free. www.ccleaner.com/

Damn it sneaky, I was gonna post this.

Anyway, its a great program. Completely free, updates fairly recently. Can add or remove startup programs. (As in, if you don't want xfire to popup when you start your computer. Or msn. Etc.) But be careful when you go to advanced options. They can be bad if you choose to delete some. =/

yes i forgot to mention that..thank you Jonmusic. There are some advanced features that you need to know what you are doing. The cool thing is that if you choose an advanced feature, it gives a small explanation of that feature, and then gives you the option to use it or not.
By default, the advanced options are not checked.
I also recommend when cleaning the registry to make a back up..(it automatically offers this option) although most of the registry stuff you clean will be old signatures from deleted programs.

i know, but programs can be the cause of slow start ups. another way to get rid of obsolete files that are stored by your machine when the computer goes into "sleep" mode, is to go into "my computer," right click on your drive, go to properties, click disk cleanup, and clean whatever needs to be deleted.
