The equation is graphable. I might be missing the point, but if one wanted to know what x equals, wouldn't 'x' be equal to the squareroot of 'y' over 2 subtracted by 1?

My good friend, that's simplifying, not solving for a variable. That is why I asked if I should graph it. He then said it was a quadratic formula and asked for it to be converted into standard form (which I had) and he then said I was wrong and that he was right because His book "Said so".

Oh I see. If one is talking about writing a linear equation in standard form it would be Ax+By=C like it was explained above by envy. I'm good at Calculus but terrible at intermediate algebra even though they are not mutually exclusive to each other.
