I remember the day when I found out that Alexander The Great was tutored by Aristotle..At first I didn't believe it, but when confirmed, I was..well, not surprised.
Alexander is my hero..For many reasons. As most of you already know, I have this thing for both Roman and Greek history. When talking of Romans, Marcus Aurelius is first on my list..The last of the "great emperors" before Rome's collapse, he was one of the greatest thinkers ever to live in my opinion.
With Alexander, he has always been an inspiration in my life since childhood..I will never forget my father telling me bits of Alexander's life.. Instead of telling classic bedtime stories, my dad would share stories of Alexander the Great..Mostly battles such as Guagamela, Hydaspes, and Tyres, but sometimes he would talk of Alexander's softer side, and the fact that he loved all things beautiful. No, I dont think Alexander was a homo, but if he was, so be it. The moral of the stories my father would tell of Alexander is that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE..I could do anything, and be anything I wanted to be in this life.
He conquered the Persian army with only 40,000 men vs 250000+
in the battle of Gaugamela..
This image sends chills down my spine. Seriously look at it. Darius was totally in absolute control, and look at Alexander's position on the field...TO THE RIGHT!?! Epic to say the least if you know anything about open field warfare.. What a true and magnificent man he was!!!!! To be RIGHT THERE with his troops..Fighting along side of them without the slightest of doubt that he would lose. The God Zeus was on his side for sure, and the God Phobos put a whoopin to King Darius!
Alexander took advantage of a small opening in Darius's position, and took his cavalry straight through to Darius himself.. Notice the left side of Alexander getting destroyed, while ALEXANDER HIMSELF goes straight after the king..When Darius saw Alexander, he turned and fled. At that moment, Alexander had to make a decision..To help his men on the left, or pursue Darius. He chose to help his left flank and the end result was total destruction of the Persian Army...ALEXANDER WAS ONLY 22 YEARS OLD AT THIS MOMENT.
Now I think Oliver Stone is a complete asshole, and totally fucked up everything about Alexander because of his own liberal homo beliefs, but this video does, in my opinion, give a historically accurate portrayal of the actual battle.. If you want to know what it was really like, this will be the closest you will ever come to knowing what happened at Guag..If you have not seen it, it's a MUST WATCH.
Notice how Alexander talked to his troops on a personal level before battle? This actually happens according to Arrian..And I believe what Arrian says, because he got his info from Ptolemy (Alexander's close friend and general). Alexander REALLY did make an epic braveheart speech, and his men got seriously fired up. They did indeed conquer fear, hence conquering death. Alexander respected his men like they were brothers, and the main reason they won this battle is not solely because of tactics, but also because of a very very strong brotherhood. EVERY SINGLE MAN IN ALEXANDER'S ARMY LOVED HIM TO DEATH.
Soon after the Battle of Guag, Alexander would occupy Babylon, Darius would be killed by a Persian insider, and Alexander would take his dreams all the way to India.
He was a real man, and his legend still lives on after 2300 years. He almost achieved his dream, and I believe he could have ruled the earth and beaten the Romans if he had not died so early. Some believe he was an actual living God, and was proclaimed to be a God when he visited Egypt. Generals to this day still use his tactics. Even Alexander's horse became legend (ask any horse lover who Bucephelous is, and you will be laughed at due to them thinking you are stupid for not knowing), he cut the Gordian knot with his sword FOR FUCKS SAKES, and he is by far, a true hero, and one damn good inspiration for anyone who is down on his luck...
"There is nothing impossible to him who will try". ~Alexander the Great
What do you think about him? Who is your hero?
